Release 4.67 Install's, Error Message When Trying To Start

Post by Anthony »

Don't know if this is the right place to post this. Trying to install Gearotic Motion before purchase but I get an error message when trying to start the program. I'd like to get this done in time to purchase before price goes up.

Win XP, 32 Bit, SP 2, 2.666 GHz, 1 GB Mem. C-Drive 17 GB used 110 GB available.

What are requirements? Anything else you need to know?

Anthony:

Try the development version to see if you get an error. It should be 4.87 or so..

List the error for me to see if I can try to figure out where the problem lies. Dont worry
about the price increase, we'll lock you in till we figure out whats going on. I havent any reports
of install errors currently, so its likely something pretty simple.

Art
Art,

Development version 4.86.1

Error signature
AppName gearoticmotion.exe AppVer 1.0.0.1 ModName atioglxx.dll
ModVer 6.14.10.8545 Offst 0051ac8e

My first download was the development version. Ran it and finished the install. Tried to start it and got an error message, didn't record the details. Went back and downloaded 4.67. This was 10 MB, larger than the first download of the development version but I don't recall that size. Ran 4.67 and completed the install. Tried to start it and got an error message, again didn't record the details. After your response, downloaded the development version which IDed itself as 4.86.1, file size 14 MB. Ran it and finished the install. Tried to start it and got an error message as posted above.

Looking in "All Programs" I don't find any reference to gearotic. I do find an entry in "Add or remove programs, Gearotic Motion V4.86.1 size 24.19 MB. (I also have an icon on the desk top or I wouldn't have been able to try any starts.)

What next?

Anthony:

>>ModName atioglxx. dll

That error is indicative of a bad video card driver or very outdated one. This error is quite common
in some systems according to google, and they say the solution is to download the latest ati catalyst drivers.
Id see if the drivers are up to date, the ATI webpage will actually check them online these days..

Let me know if this helps, or not..

Art,
Went through download and update of drivers, took a long time, large files and a long install procedure. Tried again to install the previously downloaded file for V4.86.1. Same results as last report, no satisfaction.

Hi Anthony:

Its sounding as if your opengl facility is either broken, or the video card is very old. Can you tell me what kind of video card it is.
If you go to the site

http://www.ononesoftware.com/support/607/
Youll see a line that says "Please download the OpenGL Doctor application by clicking here" , do so and lets see what the program says about your capabilities in openGL. Here, for example is what my system reports. Can you list yours so I can see if its a capability problem?
The difference between yours and mine may show me what is causing your error. Your error is reporting as comng from the OpenGL dll's,
but if I can track it down to exactly what is causing it, I may be able to make a workaround for your system.

Here's what my  system reports...

Video Card Vendor:    NVIDIA Corporation
Renderer:            GeForce GTX 550 Ti/PCIe/SSE2
OpenGL Version:      4.3.0
GLU Version:          1.2.2.0 Microsoft Corporation

Current pixel format: 9

Art,

I had to be away from this issue for a couple of weeks. Just getting back to it.

Downloaded DoctorGL.exe, tried to run it and it wouldn't run. Tried this 2 weeks ago and tried it again just now, same result, no run. Between these attempts I took the computer to the professional who built it for me and who has done the major maintenance whenever it needed it. He spent a lot of time going over it and made certain that it had the latest video card updates as of Feb. 28, 2013 Video Adapter 1 ATI Radeon9550/X1050 Series according to ATI Catalyst Control Center.

Is there another way I can check the version of Open GL or anything else I can do?

Hi Anthony:

Not good that GlDoctor wont run at all, its just a diagnostic checker that an OpenGL system is working at all, it doesnt even stress it, it just asks the card what its capable of. Your driver should be at level 6.14.10.8545 according to ATI. And it should run OpenGL programs correctly.
It could be a problem in system software though. Have you tried running "dxdiags" form the start/run button? Hit run, then type in DXDIAGS and see if you can run some of the display tests. ( This is a suggestion for XP, Im not sure your OS.)

Somethign is wrong for sure, and it may require a relaod of windows to be sure the graphics systems are working properly. At the very least you shoudl be able to run the OpenGL doctor and other OpenGL programs..

For what it's worth (and assuming you have a desktop and not a notebook) Wikipedia says the ATI 9550 was produced from 2002 to 2006, so it's old in video card years.  A low end ATI video card is under $40 online, possibly a better solution than trying to troubleshoot.  If you're not a gamer the low-enders should be just fine, I recently had problems with this motherboard's on-board video and replaced it with an ATI HD 5400 on sale for about $25.00.  GM (on 32 bit W7 Pro)  works fine with it.

If it's something other than the video card or drivers that might not help; Art's advice of reinstalling XP (it's a pain...) is a good one.  Old Windows installs seem to collect a lot of crud.  Make sure your backups are current - you do that anyway, right?  :)    Gearotic Motion's definitely worth the trouble of sorting this out.

Just the free opinion of an old retired programmer/support guy in a basement.

Kirks right, sometimes the easiest thing to do is to upgrade the video card,
not with a high priced one, but with one from a year or two ago, by then
OpenGL was a full standard, some of the earlier cards have trouble with
many of OpenGL's features, though I try very hard to ensure GM doesnt
take full advantage of hi end features like cuda and shader programming.

At some point in the future I DO see trying to take advantage of those
but Ill wait till I figure most have video cards that can handle it. In the meantime
Ill stick with being as simple on the Video Card programming as I can to do
what I need to do. :)

And it can be very satisfying to see if the old card blends, makes a nice burst on the trap range, or has a date with Mr. Sledgehammer  ;D

Windows might get snappier.  Last year's budget card will stomp a 10 year old high-end card.

Forgot to say he'll need to double check that Windows XP drivers are available, but that shouldn't be too big an issue.  I patched some WfWG systems together with spit and baling wire for years for a long term consulting customer that just wouldn't get rid of his old (not-so-)reliable machines - now that was a big pain.  He retired, the old boxes met mister dumpster after a full backup of their monster 2 GB drives.

Art,

You said "Your driver should be at level 6.14.10.8545 according to ATI." I just looked via Catalyst Control Center, that's the one.

You said "Have you tried running "dxdiags" form the start/run button? Hit run, then type in DXDIAGS and see if you can run some of the display tests. ( This is a suggestion for XP, Im not sure your OS.)" My OS is XP PS2. Tried running DXDIAGS, wouldn't run. Searched for same on my C drive, not found.

Based on other suggestions I looked for OpenGL, found C:\WINDOWS\system32\opengl32.dll .

So evidently I have something. What next?

Re: Release 4.67 Install's, Error Message When Trying To Start

Hi:

On your ATI , there should be a setting in the ocntrol panel for acceleration. It has been found on several ATI
type of cards, that if you turn acceleration off, or down ( many have a slider for it..), that errors stop. It may be
worthwhile to try that before anything else.
While the card is an older model, it shouldnt error out from running somethng liek the gldoctor or GM.. , but
on some cards from that era, it does happen. So look for the acceleration and turn it down, also turn off any special features
the card may offer, like trilinear interpolation..anything it lists as an option.

Thx
