I'm not sure i understand about your lathe as most lathe use the X axis as the cross slide and the Z axis as the carriage. On a lathe the C axis is parallel to the Z axis so that is why I am confused.

Thanks, I hope that will be the case. However I may end up being too busy with cutting jobs for customers that I will struggle to get some play time squeezed in.

I'd like to give the ticker mechanism a go at some point. I think it could made more compact if constructed from steel. Perhaps a kit would be of interest to this community?

I also have a CO2 laser for wood/plastic, just need a CNC lathe with C-axis and Y-axis and I'm all set (those are hideously expensive though!!)

On a CNC lathe, C-axis is indexing control of the spindle. Used when milling with live tooling in the turret. With Y-axis on the turret you can mill off-center.

Wow, 1kw fibre eh? How long for the cut for gears like those?
I was looking at fibre lasers and wondering what that experience would be like..
