Art, I am trying to build Scimitar. I have cut most of the components on my CNC, however, I could not locate the gear g-code. I tried to generate the gear g-code using Gearotic Motion but was unable to create a file without collision. Is there any chance of you adding the gear g-code to the download?

I was planning to build a simple clock until I saw Scimitar and became hooked!

Hi John:

Sorry about that, which gear did I miss, and how thick do you want it.. I usually use 20mm depth...

I haven't found any of the large gears or their pinions in ".tap" format. I tried creating them in Gearotic Thoughts, which was fun BTW, and I enjoyed playing with it. I created the two gears (40t & 10t) for the Simitar it self and cut them out with reasonable results however I failed to set the center hole size. They also appear to have much more "slop" than I expected.

I have really enjoyed fooling around with this project. It's too cold to sail, and too windy to fly. Just give me a warm fire and a CNC project ;-)

Thanks

John

Sorry, 20mm is fine...
My first try was about 12mm on some inexpensive plywood w/h oak laminate just to get the feel of things. I found that the Wheel and pinion That I fashioned in Gearotic Thoughts are the wrong size and won't fit, but hey, it's only the first try ...

What is a good weight to start with when adjusting the movement?

Ed;

Remove the vanes and start with just a pound or so, you shoudl be able to make the control arm swing back and forth a few turns..
Move up from there..

Hi Art,
I am getting ready to build a Scimitar.  I would like to be able to change some of the parameters of the gears - specifically the the shaft sizes.  Did you post the .gth file?  I can probably reverse engineer the project to my own specifications but the .gth file would make it much easier.  If that doesn't work for you I can use the files you already posted.

First Ticker

Post by masterbrew »

Art,

I finally had time yesterday to get most of a Scimitar cut and assembled.
It was fun and seems to run well.

Thank you very much for the plans.
When I get ti completed I will post another clip
I build things like this for my Boy Scout troops fundraiser.
If past history holds it should sell at the auction for $500 or so.
My guess is the Bat would be upward of $800.

Every year there are always two or three people who ask me to make additional units.  But never offer even half the sell price.
Good thing I am not in it for the money.

I generally try to follow the recipe the first time out.
Art was correct that one you understand how they function it is pretty straight forward on the design.
If the pesky customers will leave me alone maybe I will complete a tickers of my own design.

That is excellent. I think you guys went the smart route, build one so you fully understand the process, then get artistic.
I cant tell you how flattering it is to see duplicates of my living room wall on youtube. lol Keep up the great work.
