Hi I am a spanky new user of GM and and only just beginning to grind my way through my first project.  I am primarily a kinetic sculptor and and therefore acutely intereste d in unconvent ional gears.  I was wondering if there is a way to adapt the lantern gear generator for creation of sprockets for standard bicycle chains?

Another great option would be to somehow do the same with the hardware store lamp/light fixture chans.   I've seen some people play around with this concept on thingiver se but would love to be able to do this on my own with Gearotic.  I'm thinking it should be very doable.  The only snag would potential ly be for the lamp chain coupler where a tooth gap would have to be placed to overcome that coupler - which appears to take up the same space as two of the balls along the chain - so, theoretic ally, a single tooth on the wheel could be removed and then the pinon gear just would have to be created as a function of the wheel where it would have to be generated in multiples of two from the wheel so that the joint would always line up on it's respectiv e gear on each pass.

Sorry if these have been covered or are idiotic questions - I resubmit my newbie status...

I have some ideas for systems which would require several (in one case 32) seperate timing belts and to buy them each from a part supplier is not a realistic option for me. Bike chains and lamp chains are junkyard supplies that are easy and cheap to come by and seem - at least theoretic ally - to be good replaceme nts to provide the same ultimate function.

Has this been tried? Is it doable?

Thanks!

Bob:

Sprockets will appear shortly, Ive already obtained the specifica tion for making them, so they will appear as a new
involute gear type with industry standards . ( Next developme nt phase is scheduled for late sept timing).

As to the pins, thats a bit rougher because they'd be hard to make due to the ball shape being in the center of the
gear to capture the ball. ( Though a properly spaced timing pulley woudl probably come close to keeping on captured
during a rotation. A coupler would definitel y be a hardship as it woudl go tangent when it hit the gear making it shorten the chain
and probably throw things off...

Bob

For chain sprockets check out sprockete er ( http://www.idleamusements.com/Software/sprocketeer2.htm ) and see if it might be useful until they're added to GM.
