Hi Rob:
I have been thinking Racks lately.. because as I investiga te a general toothing algorithm, Im coming to the conclusio n that it may be best to use a rack simulatio n to do so.. still nothing concrete though, Im still completin g other projects, though they are comig to an end most of them.
Im waiting on a UV laser diode for the next 3d printer experimen t, Ill do a video of that once it gets here. I have made a scanning unit out of a laser printer, controlle d by a Pokeys USB IO device, but since Laser Printers use IR lasers that are invisable to the human eye, you cant see it do anything really, but when switched to UV, you shoudl be able to see it scan under PC control. This should in theory give me a very high res which may be more what Ive been looking for. Bit more expensive at around $150.00 to make, but much more digital and accurate if it works. You should see it soon, whether it works or not. :-)
As to Racks, I think Im going to make a rack design screen, which will allow you to at least generate racks segments that plug together with puzzle tabs to make a rack any length, then see if I can use that designed rack to create centroid toothing on any shape. While a rack is just a straight line at pressure angle angles, various modificat ions to its shape have the effect of changing the toroidals in the gears roots, and could allow asymetric tooth shapes, which can be benificia l for some types of gears. Cant promise yet if I can do this, but thats the thought.
