Hi Art,

I'm doing a design that requires a small lantern cage to mesh with a cycloidal gear. I've set the pin diameter to the proper size for these to mesh, but GM won't let me assemble them on the Project Panel. It just says Wrong Gear Type. Can you relax your error checking a bit, or is it more complicat ed?

Thanks,
Ken

Ken:

  Its a bit more complex than that as some of the informati on doesnt match between the two types. I have relaxed the rules for you though to allow the meshing in the meantime, though the simulatio n may overlap for some gears. Ill fix that up over time, btu at least
youll be able to make them appear in simulatio n and the centering will be OK and such for final outputs.

Art,

This feature now works in 4.25 but only partially . It seems that if I add the cage first I can then add an Epy gear to mesh with it. However, in my project, I need to add the Epy gear BEFORE the cage to get the proper placement . In that case I still get the "Wrong Tooth Type" message.

Am I doing something wrong or is there a workaroun d?

Thanks,
Ken

Art,

I'm starting with a New project. I create an Epy 147T gear with a DP of 31.75 (.8 Mod) and add it as the first gear in my project. Then I go to the Lantern panel and create an 11T cage and a 147T pinion. I press Create Wheel (the cage) and click on the existing 147T Epy when it turns red in the project window. I get a beep and "Wrong Tooth Type".

Ken;

 Your right, an error does present itself, I get solid creation failed instead and I can see loops in the cage teeth. Problem noted and will hopefully have a solution soon.

Hmm, could this be because the mod is different? Generally, the program hates to mesh two diffing mod's..

In my testing the Mod of both gears is .8, although I'm working in inch so I set the DP to 31.75

Hi Ken:

  I see the release doesnt allow it, but my developme nt does.. SO I hopefully will get a new version out tomorrow and that shoudl fix up your trouble. Ive relaxed the meshing requireme nts with the understan ding that the teeth may not seem to mesh properly in the simulatio n, though as long as you know the result should be OK, your fine to design such a mechanism . Smiley

Thx

Art,

I love it when software accepts the fact that its user may actually know what he's doing!  Grin

Ken:

  Smiley , its a delicate thing though, too much leeway and support letters bulge up, too little and its hard to use..
We'll tweak to find that balance..

Happy New Year..

Perhaps some new options - beginner with full restricti ons, advanced with more generous checks and warnings instead of errors, and one for letters to support will be ignored for the truly adventuro us.

Hi Kirk;

 Good idea but too complicat ed in general to set restricti on levels I think, unless maybe the user selects the level he/she wants while using Gearotic Motion... humm...

Bob:

I was thinking beginner/advanced/highly creative (you're on your own) options in the settings, to vary the level of error checking from strict to very loose.  Sometimes you're having a bad typing day and need some help, sometimes you just want to do something new and exciting outside the rules.

CNC makes remakes easy, and if you're like us here in Mooselake and work in plywood you can always use some extra kindling this time of year.
