Hi everyone just a few newbie questions, if I want to cut a spur gear with the 4th axis is the code generated just for cutting the gear teeth and do I just turn the blank up to the dimension s on the screen? I have a Tormach PCNC1100 and was going to mount the 4th Axis on the left hand side of the table so that is -- ? Thanks Will

Hi Will, Just turn the blank up to the OD as shown on the screen. In your case do not tick the box that says chuck faces --

Hi:
Chuck should face the ++ direction . When looking at the chuck from the ++ side of the axis, it should turn CCW when you command a posative rotation.
Thats about the only rules there.

Straight end mill. The tooth is shaved on the side of the mill as the rotary axis rotates. Make sure the bit is no larger than the minimum it tells you, and analyse it yourself a bit to make sure you think that size mill should do it. ( I dont totally trust my numbers on maximum size bit, though I havent found them wrong in some time.

I have just had a bit of a go at it, on my Tormach you can only mount the 4th Axis at the left side of the table when in the vertical position so I followed what John said. The first go Gearotic allowed me to post the code direct to Mach 3, but I picked the wrong gear, So I made another one 2.5module 16 teeth (or 18) the check box to post to Mach wouldn't work so I just got the file and loaded it no problems, then since I am not too sure yet I thought I would cut air and just check everythin g, the mill started up and the 4th axis started turning the code got to line 20 and that was it I stopped and restarted a couple times but the same thing? Ok had another go restarted everythin g and got it to work sort of, it is 2.5 module 16 teeth should the cutter go to 5.6mm depth for the first cut? I had the speed set at 5100 and the feed at 150 mm/min and it broke the cutter, before I played with it it was going to 10mm z depth? Its probably something stupid I am doing, I have the latest version also. Will Edit I know where the 10mm Z depth came from, the default setting was this for cut per pass, and I missed it! So I started cutting a spur gear and was having a great time with the feed at 100mm/min just a bit slow, I gradually increased the feed up to 200mm/min and things were going great until the worm on the 4th Axis came out of mesh! So I have half a gear now, anyway that is how you learn how to do these things I am out of small cutters now so I will do a couple of larger tooth gears for practice instead. Will
