Herringbone or Double Helical Gears
«

Seems to me I saw a comment here somewhere that the program couldn't produce herringbo
ne gears. All they are is double helical gears. The sticking point is the pointed tail on the outside of the Vees will interfere with the rounded bottom on the inside of the Vees. Should be easy enough to have the program modify the point to fit into the rounded bottom.
Just a thought, possibly belongs in the "features to add" section of the forum.

Anthony;
Thanks for the post, your right should be in the features to adds.. Once things settle with version 2 perhaps a relook at herringbo
ne may be in order. We have the knuckle gear...do
es that count?
Cheers

One note on the knuckle gear, when I made them up I didnt know what they should be considere
d for.. Now that Ive been analysing bevels for months, I can tell you they are about identical to a " zerol bevel " , which is considere
d half-way between a straight bevel and a helical bevel, maintaini
ng many of the propertie
s of both. (Just an interesti
ng note.. well, at least I found it interesti
ng....yea
h, well to heck with you then, Im used to being weird....
.. :-) )

Art,
Keep being weird, it is to all of our benefit! I think this program is just about the coolest piece of software I've used, except for Mach3 perhaps..
. I've been having a blast with it and am looking forward to it's continuin
g evolution
.
Anyhow, I had a thought on double helicals. It seems to me you could use the software as-is to achieve a reasonabl
e approxima
tion. Just make a left and right-hand single helical on the same blank, with a gap between them equal to the endmill diameter.

Jim:
Typical way in CNC is to make a double helix, then cut a slot in the middle to alleviate the corner binding..
