Early this year I was making some small gears based on informati on I read here -- http://www.jeffree.co.uk/Pages/multi-tooth-gear-cutter.htm - Gear cutting with a rack form multi-tooth cutter by Tony Jeffree (with a mention or two of John Stevenson). To simplify the process I created a little utility to create the data for making the rack form multi-tooth cutter and its associate d lathe tool.  It also creates the gcode to cut the gears. After reading the Tony Jeffree's web page the utility operation should be pretty straight forward.  The shaping passes are similar to the tangentia l cuts Art's software does with an end mill only this uses the multi-tooth cutter.

May be useful to some of you when you want to cut gears too small to use an end mill

Limitatio ns -- The utility is inch only and assumes your 4th axis is your x axis and many more...

The software is a executabl e and a couple of prefs files. Just unzip and put everythin g in the same folder.

Jeff,

Thanks for that.  Tony Jeffree has a nice piece of work there.  As he notes, it is much like a hob but designed for the plunge cutting of shaper-like action.  It reminds us that there are many ways to cut a gear!
