I get excited when a theory hold up.. Youll like tthe way I did it I think.
(As long as the theory continues to hold.

Basically, I use the endmill to pocket down to the root, using the base
circle intersect
ion of the tooth as the outer limits of the pocket. Then I rotate the blank, while moving the lateral axis outwards to match the evolute curve's point tangental
ly with the edge of the tool. This causes the tool to shave the curve into existance
. The user sets the segmentat
ion
of the shaving.
Its similar to the method of using a 5 stack of straight fluted cutters as a hob, only with a user selectabl
e number of cutters. While you cant have
50 straight cutters in reality, you can with this method as the lateral motion combines with rotary motion to allow any number of segments, and does 1 tooth at a time instead of 5 or so..
Slow ,maybe though. With 10 segements per tooth edge, it takes about
10 minutes to do a 15 tooth Mod 5 17 degree helical. I would imagine 20
segments takes about 18 minutes. Question is.. how many segments does an involute have to be to work OK? Ill do a video to show it.. :0
