Hi Art,
I just installed 4.30, copied my license file in the same directory but "About Gearotica" shows "Registere d to Jim Donnelly" Huh

No, I have a legit license to my name Wink

Hi Art,
Talking Escapemen t, I use Mark Headrick's document to rebuilt the Graham escapemen t of my clock :http://www.abbeyclock.com/escpdf2.html It is working very well.

Chuck:

Thx. I may indeed look at those once an escapemen t is ready. Its about half done now and looking proper.
Its the simulatio n that will be a bitch. Smiley

Hi,
I used search but did not succeed to find anything relating to the use of the calculato r. What I'm I doing wrong?
Then I try using the calculato r with a known gear-pinion set.
Enter Number of teeth: wheel= 22, pinion=15
Press calculate and obtain Gear ration of 1.4666666 6666667:1   Correct
Enter DP:   wheel=5, pinion=5
Press calculate:  Wheel Outside Dia=4.8 and Pinion=3.4             Correct
but shaft distance=0.143375...                      Obviously not right
I'm I using the calculato r properly?
Thanks,
Gaston

Thanks Art, I think I have neither the knowledge nor the proper equipment to machine the kind of material to make the cutter.
I have not tried it but my solution for now is to make a rough cut of the gear flat on the bed then put the gear on the 4th axis for the finish cut. Each tooth is cut as a 3d object, then rotate the axis six degrees and repeat the cutting for the 63 remaining teeth. This way the Y axis moves roughly by 0.33", X by 0.25" and Z by 0.26".
This should allow for a somewhat perfect circle. What do you think?

This is were the need to take one tooth space off the gear to be cut and then convert this into a D bit cutter will work.
This way the Y axis isn't needed, just Z for feed, X for travel and A for indexing.
I'm not sure what a D bit cutter is but if I understan d correctly, I would have to make a special cutter with the exact shape of one tooth, is this right?

My 4th axis is parallel to the x axis and can accommoda te wheels up to 8". Good enough to cut my clock's gears. But due to Y axis movement during cutting, the maximum diameter is drastical ly reduced to less then 5" Sad

Other then changing the algorithm that would keep the Y axis still, I don't think there is much to do about this, right? Or are there other solutions?

You probably have already seen David C. Roy art.

Does any one know where one could find winding mechanism like the one used here?

Thanks Art,
[ Not sure I get you. I never change my folder settings , they point to a desktop folder called GearData. . and each time I output a project it nicely goes into its own subfolder in GearData. .]

I see, it has more to do with the way I organize things then. I usually try to keep everythin g (drawings, program, images, pdf doc ...) related to a project in its own folder under that project.

For example, suppose ProjectA needs a gear system, I would save the file GearSyste m.gprj in the folder c:ProjectA\GearSystem\  then, I would expect Output Manager to save the output files in c:\ProjectA\GearSystem\gearData automatic ally, without having to change the default path in Program Settings every time I change project.

It would be more convenien t, for me at least, if the default path would be where the gprj file is saved.
Hope this is clearer.

I see. What name is it stored in the registry? I looked for gearotic and gearoticm otion to no avail?

Unless there is a good reason to do it the way it is, I would suggest to remove the default location and have the Output Manager to store the output files along with the project in the project folder.
That would save having to change the default in Program Settings for every new project.
Does this make sense?

I have search for my output files today to find, after a while, that the Program Settings default folder was pointing to the Geardata folder in a ... previous version   Roll Eyes
Is there a reason why the Output Manager does not write the output files along with the project in the project's folder instead of the actual default.
Or is this possible already?
Thanks,
Gaston

Yes you are right. I thought that was what I did. Oh well, I wish I could go back and watch the replay.
Thanks all,

How can I set the Gear and Pinion with different shaft diameters .
It seems that if I change one it sets both the same.
I'm using beta3.004
Thanks,
Gaston

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the nice comment.
I simply put a color acetate of the original image behind the lithophan e Shocked)
