I appreciat e that the operation of my signal inverter circuit is perhaps not easily understoo d so I have attached a diagram.
(It was done this way so that it could be used in circuit with the ribbon cable and not require an additiona l power source).

Almost any NPN switching transisto r would do. I used a ZTX304 because that is what I had to hand.

If I understoo d correctly PWM turns on the laser only a small amount of time to get a percentag e of the power.
 And the pot still determine s the max output power. Which means that I need to connect to a PWM contact shooting laser.

It is important to keep the Pulse Repetitio n Frequency below 20kHz (to protect the laser switching electroni cs) but I have had no problems connectin g the 57CNCís 5 Volt PWM signal directly to the TTL(L) input of my CO2 laser, although I did hardware invert the signal as described here; http://gearotic.com/ESW/FavIcons/index.php?topic=1785.msg13131#msg13131
